Rabbi Dovid Freilich, Shlita.

The rabbi of Perth Synagogue, Perth Hebrew Congregation and also Mora D’asra of Western Australia is Horav Dovid Freilich, Shlita. Rabbi Freilich received rabbinic qualifications from Jew’s College, London which is under the auspices of the Chief Rabbi of the British Commonwealth. He received semichas (ordination) from the Rosh Yeshiva of Chidushei Harim B’nei Brak Hagoan Horov Gedalia Hertz zz’l from Av Beth Din Haifa and Dayan of Beth Din Gadol Yerushalayim Hagoan Horov Yakov Fink zz’l from Hagaon Nachum Dovid Herman zz’l, of Kollel America, himself a musmach (ordained by) the great Rav Chaim Ozer Grodzensky and son of Rav Yakov Yosef Herman of the book “All For The Boss” fame and from Rabbi Yakov Newman, formerly of the rabbinical seminary of Johannesburg, author of an authoritative book on semicha (ordination) and later Dean of the Institute of Judaic Studies in Tel Aviv and Rabbi Freilich also has many testimonials from many important rabbis and rebbes in Israel.

Rabbi Freilich was the first Sydney-born congregational rabbi and served as rabbi and spiritual leader of Kinsgsford-Maroubra Synagogue for fifteen years (from 1973-1988). During that time he was the founding Rabbi of a thriving Jewish Day School, Mt Sinai College in Sydney and was its spiritual dean. As well as his rabbinic qualifications, Rabbi Freilich has a BA (Hons) degree from London University through Jew’s College and a Master of Arts from Sydney University. He was lecturer in Judaic studies in the training of Jewish Studies teachers at the Sydney College of Advanced Education, as well as visiting lecturer in Talmudic Law at the University of New South Wales, Law Faculty. He was appointed Vice President to the New South Wales Jewish Medical Ethics Committee and was also teacher of the New South Wales Jewish Board of Education’s Ramah Academy for eleven years.

In 1988, Rabbi Freilich became the chief rabbi of the Perth Hebrew Congregation. He is currently the President of the Council of Orthodox Rabbis and Educators of WA (CORE) as well as Senior Vice-President of the Organisation of Rabbis of Australasia (ORA) and heads Beth Din matters in Perth. He is the Rabbinic Chairman of the rabbinic board of the Kashrut Authority of Western Australia as well as halachic authority for the Carmel School. Rabbi Freilich is also official visiting Jewish chaplain to the Edith Cowan University. The rabbi is also patron of the Council of Christian and Jews in Western Australia. In the 2005 Queen’s Birthday Honours List, Rabbi Freilich was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to the Jewish community as a religious leader and in the fields of education and culture, and to the promotion of inter-faith relations.

Rabbi Freilich’s wife Aviva, herself a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Laws with Hons from the University of Sydney is a lecturer in Law at the University of Western Australia. They are blessed with four children (Baruch Hashem) Pnina, Sarah, Osher and Dvorah and four grandchildren. Osher studied in the prestigious Yeshivas Kol Torah in Yerushalayim. Rabbi Freilich strongly believes in accommodating and welcoming every Jew, no matter what their level of observance and emphasizes that no Jew can be judgmental of his or her fellow Jew. It is only the Almighty who knows the spiritual level of each and everyone of us.
